Custard: A True Brit Dessert
I grew up in a house with a British mother so custard was a staple with desserts.  At any holiday, birthday, or major gathering, we all requested custard and even now I look forward to those special days when Mom stands over the stove and whisks away so that the concoction congeals *just* right.  We’ll have custard over fruit or pie, over pound cake, or if mom has a lot of time in a trifle....

Holiday Week Training
I can’t believe that Christmas 2011 has come and gone.  In 5 days it will be 2012.  Holy cow!! As I write this, I’m sitting by the fire by the tree with open Christmas presents around and still trying to digest yesterday’s gluttony. This winter (all 5 days of it) have been odd - from balmy weather to freezing cold.  People don’t know how to dress (including me) and...

House Calls: Cause of the Week
House Calls was founded by a family friend, Michael Byl, as a marathon-length run to benefit Amos House, Inc. and the Ridgefield Playhouse.  This is the second year of the House Calls run.  Last year, 2010, the run raised over $9,000 for the two causes.  House Calls begins and ends at the Ridgefield Playhouse and stops at Amos House as well as the Jericho Partnership.  This year, House Calls is...

Easy Salmon and Beet Salad for a Group
5 Family gatherings.  Friendsgivings. The holidays.  Any group of loved ones around the table.  This season is full of reasons to get together - and for none of these do people want to be slaving away in the kitchen while everyone else is chattering elsewhere. Saturday night in Boulder.  We’d had 3 days of family and it was our last night.  My aunt and I decided to cook dinner together and...

Christmas Week Training
I have to admit something.  After such an awesome week the week before, last week’s training was pretty shoddy.  I skipped my Tuesday run (I got to the gym and realized I forgot socks and pants), I skipped my Wednesday cross-training (I was traveling to DC), I skipped my race on Saturday and did my long run so I took a semi-rest day on Sunday.  But, instead of looking at the negatives,...

I love this description of how sparkling wine is made - and the differences. sparklersandoakbombs: (But maybe a little bit more now than usual.) I personally don’t need a reason to celebrate and open a bottle of sparkling wine. “It’s Thursday” seems like a good enough explanation as to why I’m popping open the bubbly. There are just too many fabulous, affordable…

NYRR Youth Programs: Cause of the Week
As a new feature, I’m going to be highlighting the causes that the races are for - as well as some great nonprofits that come into my view.  I might as well use this for some good, right? And nonprofit work has always been in my blood. So…. for the very first, I would like to bring to your attention, the New York Road Runners Youth Programs, which was the featured cause of the Jingle...

Spiced Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
As we all know, ‘tis the season.  As I’ve said before, it’s the season for baking - and I’d rather give away the goodies than eat them all myself.  I had a holiday party with my clients and opted to bring in some fresh baked cookies for the occasion.  And I sent the other half to my sister who is in finals mode.  I love chocolate chip cookies but I always feel that during...

Week 1 of Training for Marathon #2(!!)
After my crazy decision last week to run the Disney Marathon next month, I kicked my butt back into training gear.  And I am feeling it!  It’s a good feeling, though my legs are not very happy with me.  Last week I ran Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.  I also did yoga, core work, weights, and biking.  And I need to keep going in that positive direction. On Saturday 12/10, I...

Name Change
Yes… for a year and a half you’ve known me as La Bonne Vivantella.  But, I’ve had a change of heart and a change in names. Somehow, in that time, I’ve become a runner.  And, my friends, I’ve always joked that I run for a few things.  Food.  Hot cocoa in the winter.  Bubbly.  Boys ;-) (well, Gina does so more than I do ;-)).  Wine.  And, of course, charity. So, I...

I've Done Something Crazy
Two days ago I was looking through my race calendar for early 2012. And looking back at my race calendar for 2011. For 2012, I realized I had the Al Gordon Classic at the end of February, Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks the first weekend in March, potentially the NY Half March 18th if I get in in the lottery, and potentially the Cherry Blossom 10 miler April 1st if I get in *that*...

26.2 New York: DONE IS WONDERFUL!!
I can’t believe it has taken me so long to post my marathon recap.  My first marathon.  My New York City Marathon.  It was hard to write.  It was emotional.  Because it was so wonderful. On Sunday 6 November, 2011, not only did I run 26.2 miles in the New York City Marathon, but I ROCKED 26.2 miles.  And, I did it for an awesome charity, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.  5:06:08....

Jingle Bell Jog in a Couple of Days
Last year around this time, I decided to run my first New York Roar Runner Race, the Jingle Bell Jog.  I can’t believe that a year has flown by and that this Saturday I’ll be jogging in jingle bells for the second time! I feel like I’ve been a tad lax in the training leading up for this - and while yes, it is only a 4 mile run, that doesn’t mean I can go in unprepared.  On...

Cinnamon Walnut Banana Bread
The holidays are upon us (“Already!?!?!,” a voice in my head keeps screaming). And with them comes holiday shopping, partying, and, of course, baking.  As my mother has been away, I’ve been spending my week at my parents’ house taking care of my dogs…. and my dad.  And that means cooking for him and using up their produce before it goes off.  Which meant more banana...
