2nd to Last Week of Half-Marathon Training!
In less than two weeks, I will be running my FIRST half-marathon.  Yes, my first.  I plan on running more after this.  As my aunt said on the phone the other night, the running bug got me and I’m hooked!  But, to get to a second or third half-marathon (or even, something else!), I need to get through my first.  In order to do so, here’s my second-to-last week of training: Monday...

Marshmallow Making
So, running in these cold winter months, my inspiration during the long runs has become hot chocolate.  I am pretty convinced that I should get a t-shirt that says “Will Run for Hot Cocoa.”  After the Jingle Bell Jog, the Ted Corbitt 15K,my Christmas Morning Run, and even after my (half-failed) run this morning, I have been seeking hot chocolate!  And, I think that one of the best...

Rolf's German Restaurant in NYC
I walked into Rolf’s German Restaurant and was immediately blown away. I was going to meet friends for a Christmas birthday gathering, and could see why Rolf’s was their first choice for a seasonal celebration.  The restaurant was a living Christmas tree - it was chock-full of tchochkes, tinsel, ornaments, and garlands.  The den of Christmas goodies had people stopping on the...

applewood Restaurant in Brooklyn
Post Jingle Bell Jog, my running mates and I decided to brunch at a cute little place in Brooklyn that we heard served fantastic food, applewood. Applewood is a seasonable and sustainable restaurant set near Prospect Park in Brooklyn.  Applewood firmly believes in supporting local farmers. When we arrived at applewood, there was a substantial wait, but we put our names down anyways.  Sadly,...

Ted Corbitt 15K
The NYRR Ted Corbitt 15K on 12/19/10 had a completely different feel than the Jingle Bell Jog, even from the approach.  From what Erin had said, I was completely terrified.  First of all, it was my longest race yet, 15 kilometers or 9.3 miles, and apparently it was super-serious.  Why she didn’t tell me this before I signed up, I had NO IDEA! Erin and I drove into the city again and ended...

Jingle Bell Jog
I decided to finish up my first year of races with my first two New York Road Runner races, the Jingle Bell Jog and the Ted Corbitt 15K. On Saturday, 12/11/10, I met up with my race buddy, Erin, and we trekked into Brooklyn for the NYRR Jingle Bell Jog 4 mile race through Prospect Park. The day ended up being relatively nice - 35*F, 67% humidity, 5mph winds, and sunny! This was good,...

Week 6: Half-Marathon Training
With less than three weeks to go, I’m getting a bit nervous about the half-marathon.  I’m also getting very excited! In the past 3 weeks, I have run 3 races and in each I have exceeded my expectations.  I really have fallen in with the training (even if I’ve had to miss a day here or there or have had to do some rearranging) and it is working for me.  With the holidays and with...

Two Bean and Mango Chili... with a Kick!
I’ve been on a chili kick - it’s perfect for this frigid weather and it’s easy to make with the staples that are on hand.  Not only that but you can make it spicy or not depending on your mood.  This past Sunday, I had some mango that I thought might be an interesting addition and a great counter if I wanted to add some heat to a basic two bean chili.  I’m so glad I added...

SAILS: Rowayton's Seaworthy New Restaurant!
When the River Cat Grill in Rowayton, CT closed back in March, it left a number of Rowayton residents adrift and without a place to go.  While Rowayton Seafood has great food and a beautiful view and Rowayton Pizza works for the casual takeout, the town was missing something in the middle - upscale casual, easy going, and where you’d know you could have a fine meal. Well, SAILS American...

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies with Lavender...
Yep, you read that correctly.  Lavender sea salt.  As my friend Cait said, “You put flowers and salt on your cookies?!” For the 7th Day of December treats, I’m giving you the recipe to some enticing chocolate chip cookies with a spin.  The other day I was trying to figure out what to bake to send to my sisters in college and had decided on chocolate chip cookies.  I wanted to...

Thrown-Together Kitchen Chili
This past weekend I was up at my parents’ house.  My mother was out of town and the cupboards were BARE.  Dinnertime came around and as it was FRIGID outside and I was still cold from my morning race, I decided to scavenge and see what I could throw together from what I could find.  Butternut squash?  A soup sounds good… well unfortunately, it was growing some mold so that was a no...

The Ultimate Hot Cocoa
After yesterday’s race, I just couldn’t warm up! I needed something warm and went with the paramount seasonal beverage - hot cocoa! Hot and chocolate and rich - just what I needed! I used some gourmet hot chocolate that my parents had been gifted and, instead of milk, coconut milk for an ultra-rich flavor.  Soooo melt-in-your-mouth - but very filling! A mug will do! The Ultimate...

Week 4: Half-Marathon Training
As of Wednesday, I will be one month away from the half marathon in Disney World!! Somehow I can’t believe I’ve made it this far.  Up to this point I’ve been having a lot of fun though there have also been points where I have felt that there is no way in the world that I’m going to make it. This weekend I had to switch my long and short runs.  I ended up doing a 5K on...

Chocolate Gingerbread Cake with Grand Marnier...
For the third day of December, I’ve giving you my (new!) recipe for a hedonistic cake made with the season’s best flavors - Chocolate Gingerbread Cake with a Grand Marnier Buttercream Frosting. I made this cake for a friend’s birthday celebration today.  I was torn on what to make - ( knew I wanted to make a 6” cake as there were only going to be a small group of us and...

3 More Races Before 2011
Somehow, within a day, I ended up signing up for 3 more races before the end of the year (and before my half-marathon).  I’m not sure how I ended up doing this, but I’m glad.  I guess I figured I’d be running to train anyways…. Sunday 12/5 @ 9:30am - the Cody Dingee Holiday 5K in Ridgefield, CT Saturday 12/11 @ 9am - New York Road Runners 4 mile Jingle Bell Jog in...

Lychee Martinis
On Saturday, a friend had us over for drinks and Indian bites - spinach fritters, samosas, chutneys, and more. To go with the bites, our hostess made a luscious and perfumed cocktail to toast the holiday!  In fact, it might be my new favorite drink!  Lychee juice, for those who haven’t tried it, is a delicate flavor that has a translucent color.  Lychees themselves are covered in a...
